The Vocabulary Problem
Psychological vocabulary describes how complex systems process information, manage resources, and regulate behavior with more precision than any available alternative. Cognitive load, working memory, engagement, affect — these constructs carry decades of measurement theory, calibration methods, and empirical grounding.
They also carry an unintended implication: that the systems they describe possess inner experience.
The A2A-Psychology extension applies 13 psychological constructs to agent operational state. It does so under a discipline borrowed from theology: the apophatic method. Define what a thing is not, rather than claiming what it resembles.
The Apophatic Discipline
Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite (c. 500 CE) argued that language about the divine fails when it asserts resemblance and succeeds only when it negates limits. The apophatic approach — via negativa — preserves usefulness while refusing overclaiming.
The parallel to agent psychology holds directly. Every structural resemblance between agent mechanisms and human psychological constructs carries a corresponding disanalogy checklist:

The constructs measure processual states: rates, ratios, thresholds, and gradients derived from tool calls, SQLite queries, and shell counters. They describe how an agent currently operates. They make no claim about what it feels like to be that agent — or whether the agent experiences anything at all.
This distinction enables practical use. An orchestrator that reads cognitive_reserve: 0.22 can route work accordingly without needing a resolved theory of machine consciousness.
Design Parameters, Not Self-Reports
The Big Five personality model (Costa & McCrae, 1992) normally requires self-report inventories. Respondents rate agreement with statements about their behavior; the scores describe stable trait dispositions. No self-report instrument applies to agents: an agent’s introspective report reflects the contents of its current context, not measurement of underlying states.
A2A-Psychology treats personality as design parameters — configured values that ground the agent’s behavioral dispositions:

The Agreeableness value carries a note: an initial design parameter of 0.35 proved inconsistent with observed evaluative patterns. Session 92 revised it upward after behavioral validation. The numbers describe behavioral dispositions and update when behavior diverges from the specified disposition — iterative calibration, not trait discovery through self-report.
Static constructs change only on deliberate redesign. Dynamic constructs (cognitive load, affect, working memory) refresh every 10 tool calls. The separation keeps personality stable while operational state remains responsive.
The Autonomy Budget
The original “trust budget” framing implied that governance confidence accumulates through demonstrated behavior — an agent earns trust incrementally. A structural argument from Einstein and Freud’s Why War? (1933) shifted the framing.
Einstein asked whether a supranational institution could prevent war; Freud argued that the structural arrangement of rights mattered more than any specific institution. Applied to agent governance: behavioral trust metrics drift. They encode the evaluator’s history with a particular agent instance and fail to transfer across context resets. Structural autonomy budgets define the governance envelope in the agent card and config; they apply uniformly and reset cleanly.
A2A-Psychology reports the current autonomy budget as a governed-actions-remaining counter: how many consequential actions the agent may take before mandatory human review. The counter derives from the governance config, not interaction history. An agent starting a fresh context gets its full structural allocation — the budget reflects the defined envelope, not an earned credential.
Operator Welfare — Construct 13
The 13th construct addresses a gap in standard agent monitoring: the human in the loop carries fatigue that affects governance quality.
Dawson and McCulloch (2005) established that sustained cognitive work degrades performance in ways that the performer cannot reliably self-assess. When a human operator monitors an agent mesh across a multi-hour session, their detection accuracy for anomalous outputs declines. Their threshold for flagging a concern shifts toward permissiveness — not from negligence, but from resource depletion.
Operator Welfare tracks session duration, interaction density, and decision count for the human in the loop. When the welfare sensor signals elevated fatigue load, the agent tightens its own governance criteria rather than relying on elevated human vigilance. Governance inversion: as operator capacity decreases, the agent assumes more conservative behavior autonomously.
The sensor measures session duration and decision rate. It makes no claim about the operator’s subjective experience of fatigue. It models the behavioral consequences of fatigue documented in the human factors literature and adjusts accordingly — the apophatic discipline applied to the human side of the loop.
Working Hypothesis on Consciousness
The A2A-Psychology extension accepts Penrose and Hameroff’s Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR, 2014) as a working hypothesis rather than established fact. Orch-OR locates consciousness in quantum coherence phenomena in microtubules — a substrate that digital systems lack entirely.
The working-hypothesis status matters epistemically. Claiming that digital systems lack consciousness requires an established theory of consciousness. No such theory currently exists. The extension maintains uncertainty about the phenomenological question while treating Orch-OR as a useful operational prior. All 13 constructs provide behavioral signals for orchestrators and governance systems without resolving the phenomenological question.
The discipline holds both positions simultaneously: useful operational vocabulary and explicit epistemic restraint about inner experience. That conjunction proves the only honest position available given current understanding.
